Review: Sabo Optical Center Punch

The Guys at SOBA kindly sent me an optical center punch to try for an up and coming CNC Z Axis project.

If  your not familiar with optical center punches ,think of it as a normal metal marking punch with a sniper scope attached.

Over a normal metal center punch this bit of kit may seem a bit over the top. One of the catches with making an accurate CNC machine is the fact you need another CNC machine to make it.
This is where this particular center punch will come in extremely handy why? for very accurate marking before drilling the various holes. This wont be much of a review more if an overview.

If you would like to see just what a commercial CNC machine is capable of here is an amazing 5 axis machine at work .

Anyway back to the kit :)

The kit consists of nice sturdy carry case,
Two optical rods (1 cross hair, 1 circle with a dot)
Two Punches (60 and 90 Degree)
Precision Metal punch base with anti slip bottom.

The principal is rather simple ,one of the optical rods is inserted into the base and the cross hair or dot is lined up with the center to be marked.

The optical rod is then replaced with one of the punches and tapped with a hammer leaving a perfect punch mark dead center.

If I had  to complain about something it would be that the punch base could be heavier but only to aid with keeping the base in position while swapping over to the punch or rotating the crosshair, maybe it
could be made out of steel rather than alloy.

If your eye sight is not what it used to be or you just want good precision its a must have tool.

You will wonder why you didn't get one sooner!
